AMSTERDAM -  After only 7 days, one of the sites of the Long Tailers entered Google on #2 in the UK and the US. How is that possible?

Laura came up with the idea to open a site about boardercross racing. That is a snowboarding competition in which four rider go down a course of slalom turns, bank turns, bumps and kickers. It’s not well known, and that is one of the criteria to become a Long Tailer. Google spidered this site two days ago and picked up the announcement of Laura’s site. The fact that we are in the long tail with the specific phrase ‘boardercross racing’ explains why Google picks us up, even when the site has no Pagerank yet.  There are only 300 sites with worldwide with this phrase in it.

But why is the announcement of Laura’s site on spot 2 out of 300? The Long Tailers has 29 pages indexed, the number 3 over 220. So how can it be that a site with no reputation and only a few pages wins from almost 300 sites? Over 200 factors determine what is the order of answers in Google. Pagerank is not an important factor in Laura’s triumph. Most of the competing sites have no or a low PR, so the winner is decided on other factors. Which one? With special tools, you can find out the keyword density of a word or phrase. The phrase “bordercross racing” scores a density of 0.69% on The Long Tailers.  The number #3 in Google (februari 2007), has a density of only 0,17%.  And the number 300 has a keyword density below 0,01%.  So that could be a reason, but there are other factors.  How is the quality of the links to the Long Tailers, compared to other sites? Most of the 300 sites don’t respond to the Google-command link:(name of site): the incoming links aren’t recorded (yet?). With “(name of site)” we can establish a better guess. The number of incoming links and the quality of the links is for The Long Tailers a little higher then most competitors. So here’s a possible reason why Laura scores well: her theme ”bordercross racing” is Long Tail, the announcement has a low  keyword density , but other sites have even a lower one and the quality of the incoming links to The Long Tailer is better then most competitors. Welcome Laura in Google!
